Yes, you read that title correctly – The New Mutants is a horror film set in the X-Men superhero universe. 2018 is looking so much better already.
When we first heard that The New Mutants was going to be a horror film, we didn’t believe it. Now the first trailer is here, and we can see for ourselves just how the movie has a firm grasp of its horror identity, we absolutely believe it, and love it.
Directed by Josh Boone (who directed The Fault in Our Stars and is about to begin tackling Stephen King’s opus, The Stand), The New Mutants is based on the Marvel comics of the same name first published in the early 1980s – here’s the official premise for the film:
Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world – they’re just trying to save themselves.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Boone said that New Mutants will be “a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.” When asked what drew him to this project, he said it was the comics themselves and the work of “one of the most amazing comic book artists ever” – Bill Sienkiewicz, who Boone says gave the comics “a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”
Well that’s got out saliva bubbling, roll on 2018.
